Quick Assist is a great tool from Microsoft. It allows you to connect to another persons computer and help them with an issue. This isn't just an IT support tool - it can be really helpful within organisations to help other team members when needed.
However - if the person connecting is not who you think they are, then that is a problem. You've just given them control of your machine.
We've seen clients receive unsolicited calls in the last week by "IT Support", asking to connect to users machines "to carry out some checks". Most recognised these as a scam, but the bad guys were asking to connect via Quick Assist. No install required, no virus or malware attack, just human engineering.
If you get a call saying it is IT support and they ask to connect to your machine - stop and think twice. If in doubt - hang up the call and then contact your IT support team yourself using their usual method. Any good IT provider (like our team at 4Cambridge) will not mind their clients doing this extra check.
